Summary
- The macleanup script and the macleanup app run on your Mac. Neither uploads your files or file paths.
- The script has no analytics. The app and this website count which screens are opened and which actions are used, with Google Analytics, to improve them. The counts never include a file path, a file name or your email address. There is no advertising.
- An account is optional. Signed in, we store your email, your plan and run numbers: section numbers, sizes, results and your macOS version.
- The assistant sees section numbers, sizes and counts, never a file path or file name. A spoken question is turned into text and the recording is not kept.
On your Mac
Logs, reports, receipts and archives are written to ~/.macleanup/ on your Mac and stay there. The app reads folders on your Mac to measure them; that information is shown to you and is not sent anywhere. Settings are stored in ~/.macleanuprc and in the app's local storage.
The optional update check contacts GitHub Releases, and npx may download the package from npm. Those services receive normal request details such as an IP address.
The app, this website and the documentation also read the newest release notice from our backend provider when they start and every 15 minutes, so they can tell you when an update is required. That request carries the product's version and nothing about you or your Mac.
Usage counts: the app and this website send Google Analytics a count when a screen opens or an action is used, such as starting a preview or opening the plans. A count carries the screen or action name and simple numbers, like how many sections a preview covered. It never carries a file path, a file name, a section's item list, your email address or a device ID. The app gives each install a random counting ID that says nothing about your Mac. When you are signed in, counts from the app are also linked to your account's random ID, never to your email address or name. Google receives normal request details such as an IP address. Counting is part of how the app and site work, so there is no switch for it; the script never counts anything.
Your account
Signing in uses Google. We receive your email address and name from Google and store them with your plan, your monthly run count, your saved shortcuts and the run numbers each Mac syncs. File and folder paths are never sent. Account data is held by our backend provider, Supabase.
Assistant and Speak
When you ask the assistant about a preview, the app sends your question and, for each section in the preview, its number, planned size, recovery tier, item count and status. It never sends a file path, a file name or an item. Answers are written by Anthropic's Claude models; our file and AI provider, FilesHub, chooses the account the request runs on. If you use Speak, the app records your voice only while you hold the button, for at most 30 seconds. The recording goes to Groq, our speech-to-text provider, comes back as text for you to check, and is not stored by us. We count how many questions each account or Mac asks per month, so the plan's monthly allowance works; we do not keep the questions or the answers.
Receipt backups
On a plan that includes receipt backups, you can copy a receipt's summary to your account and restore it on another Mac. A backup holds the receipt's date, kind, macOS and app version, totals and, for each section, its number, status, sizes and item count. It holds no file paths or file names. Backups are stored privately with FilesHub and are deleted when you delete them or your account.
Payments and refunds
Payments are handled by Polar, our payment provider. We receive the plan you chose and the payment status; we never receive your card number.
All purchases are final. We do not offer refunds for Pro or Team plans, for any billing period, including a period you did not fully use. When you cancel, your plan stays active to the end of the period you paid for. If a bank or the payment provider reverses a payment, the plan time that payment covered ends, and we tell you by email.
We send three kinds of email, all through our email provider, FilesHub.
- Account emails. Welcome, payment receipts, a returned payment, a confirmed referral, a team invite and the result of a scheduled run if you turned that on.
- Important product updates. To every account, when something needs your attention: a required update, a security fix, or a change to the plans, these terms or this policy. They are rare.
- Optional updates. Release news and other optional product updates, only if you ask for them: on the download page, where we send a confirmation email first, or with the switch on the app's Account screen. Each one has an unsubscribe link, and the app switch turns them off too.
For optional updates, FilesHub keeps your address, when and where you signed up, and which links in those emails you clicked. After you unsubscribe, it keeps a coded form of the address only so that nothing is sent to it again.
Keeping and deleting
You can download your account data or delete your account from the Account screen in the app. Deleting removes your account, plan record, synced run numbers and receipt backups from our servers, and turns off optional updates to its address. Everything stored on your Mac stays until you remove it.
Account data also sits in our database host's daily backups for up to 7 days. Those backups exist to recover from an outage; a deleted account is never restored from them, and macleanup keeps no other copy.
